This is an easy walk of about 3 miles. It takes you through one of the most fashionable areas of London. There are some exceptional late Georgian and early Victorian Town Houses and terraces. You start at one underground station and finish at another. The last part is a little dull although you do get to see the Emirates stadium – home of Arsenal Football Club. Here are a few notes and links that might help you anticipate the walk – or reflect about it afterwards.
Colebrook Row is encountered early on this route – after passing through the bustle of Camden passage. Colebrook Row was a choice of housing for Boris Johnson but also Charles Lamb (1823-27). The grass strip running down the front of the terrace was once the New River. It was enclosed in 1861, covered and planted.
Near point G on the map is Canonbury Tower, close to George Orwell’s house and the oldest surviving building in Islington.
Look out for two distinguished pubs. The Kings Head and the Canonbury Tavern.
And two churches. St John the Evangelist catholic church at the start of the walk and a little later St Mary’s Islington. That church was almost destroyed during the London Blitz – leaving only the spire and porch but its was rebuilt.
More can be learned about the area by listening to the Chair of the Planning Committee discussion it here. Or checking out the Canonbury Society’s website. Or going here for more walking guidance in the area here.
